Fuller had not left Southlawn as early as she had planned, so the prospect of making the forty-mile ride in a single day seemed very unlikely. She did not mind. A night alone camping would give her time to reflect on her visit and prepare to deflect Emilee’s teasing.

I am clearly intrigued and attracted to him. No need denying that. She allowed herself to admit at least that much. The idea of him finishing his oath still loomed as some vague, undefined detail, but it promised great possibilities.

She looked up the trace and realized she was nearly halfway. Ahead of her was the first of the rolling hills that edged up to the rim of the bluff, before the steep, five-mile section of trail that would traverse the thousand feet descent back into Terantis. The weather was sunny, but there was a cold breeze coming from the north.
